Hate when this happens abroad!!

I’ll never forget when I solo visited Germany for the first time and I finally (after a few hours) managed to stir up the courage to leave the house and go practice my German – and it was a FAIL! I was ordering a sandwich from scratch and I guess my pronunciation of the ingredients was pretty unintelligible because the sandwich guy looked up at me and asked “um…German or English?” Sir. I AM TRYING! I ended up ordering the rest in English but that was pretty crushing for me. The good news is that for the following 8 days I kept practicing and by one of my last days, I was being seated in a restaurant and overheard the waitress ask the hostess who sat me if I speak English or German, and since my greeting and requests were pretty spot on, the hostess said “no no, German is fine!” YES! Win! The lesson here is…you’re going to mess up. But you won’t learn until you KEEP messing up and putting yourself out there.
