How I was able to forgive

Forgiveness is so important and often times people will tell you it’s not for the other person, but it’s for you.

I really couldn’t fathom it at first because it almost felt like forgiveness would be letting them off easy. It took a lot of time for me to truly understand forgiveness. At first I thought it was a feeling and I would say that I forgave the person who hurt me but I felt contradictory.

It took me years to realize that it’s a choice. And I mean years. It’s a conscious and deliberate decision to release feelings of resentment or vengeance. I had to realize that forgiveness doesn’t mean you’re saying it’s okay, because that’s what it felt like.

But rather, forgiveness is about finding peace and freeing yourself from the bondage of anger and bitterness.
