I screwed up in my relationship

If you haven’t read my previous post ”I was toxic to my relationship”. Read that caption, it tells a lot about what type of partner I’ve been in the past.

A quick backstory. Literally just the other day, I got upset at my husband for the smallest thing and I turned it into a huge fight.

When we went to bed I was yelling at him for hours, said hurtful things and was just totally out of line. I finally sent him to sleep in the living room.

The next morning, I woke up bitter and still upset. I was ignoring him the whole morning.

I did the exact OPPOSITE of the advice I typically share.

Here’s how I made it right.

I PRAYED: while Brian was out that morning, I prayed and asked God to forgive me, to take away the shame and embarrassment that I felt, to wipe my slate clean, to humble me and help me genuinely apologize.

I APOLOGIZED: saying sorry is so hard for me. So to do this is a huge effort on my part. When he came home, I genuinely apologized.

I PROMISED TO DO MY BEST THE NEXT TIME: I say next time, because there WILL be a next time. We’re human and we won’t always get it right. As long as your heart is in the right place and you do your best, your partner should understand that, give you grace and forgive you. (Even if they feel you don’t deserve it)

LET IT GO: We usually hug it out and let it go. Because if we dwell on it, it’ll just become an ongoing argument. So we try not to bring it up anymore, don’t use it as leverage, we don’t keep a list of on-going mistakes. It’s in the past.
