UNGATEKEEPING TROMSØ AURORA TOUR

🙄 Yes, there are plenty of tours in Tromsø, and I definitely struggled to choose because of all the branding, marketing, reviews, pricing, and so on. After much deliberation, we finally settled on Greenlander because it met our two main objectives:

1️⃣ We wanted a small group to cater to me and my family. With 6-8 people, it was ideal for the five of us.

2️⃣ We wanted a photographer to capture these moments for us.

🚐 When we met up with Greenlander, we were surprised to see the other tour agencies and travelers at the same pick up location. Some of these agencies were ones we had considered going with too!

💁🏼‍♂️ We quickly realized that these agencies were actually friends! There was no competition between them. In fact, during the tour, they were constantly communicating via a WhatsApp group chat about the wind direction, cloud cover, and the aurora. I even asked Dewit, our guide and photographer, if they always did this or if it was just because of the bad weather. He replied, "There's nothing to compete about; we all just want to see the aurora borealis, so we help one another." Honestly, that was all I needed to know about him.

🙆🏼‍♂️ Our group consisted of Dewit, my family, my partner, and three older women (in their late 60s) from Singapore and Malaysia. We headed north for an hour, then took a 15-minute toilet break at a nearby petrol kiosk before continuing our chase for the Northern Lights for the next 3-4 hours.

🚙 Originally, I wanted to chase the lights on my own with my family, just like my cousin and his friends did when they went to Sweden. However, I'm thankful I didn't, as driving in the dark would have been incredibly difficult to navigate.

🥣 Finally, after repeatedly getting in and out of the van to check on the lights, we settled on a large field and enjoyed some hot soup under the Northern Lights. Honestly, the soup wasn’t that great, but the experience was unforgettable!
