As an average runner with three half marathons under my belt, I was always looking for beginner resources. Here are some of my fav tips:

🏃🏼‍♀️: SHOES. They’re expensive. Invest in your feet. You’ll run so much better with better shoes. Go to your local running store and get fitted. Don’t fuss too much about what kind, just get fitted. I’ve run all 3 races in Hoka Clifton 8s. Also, don’t underestimate the power of correct socks. And calf compression sleeves.

🏃🏼‍♀️: NUTRITION. Running takes ENERGY. Lots of it. Carb load before long runs, make sure you’re eating enough throughout the week, and don’t neglect nutrition DURING your runs. Find what works for you and your stomach during runs. My favorite during run nutrition are Clif Bloks. Actually so yummy and keeps my energy high! AND HYDRATION IS KEY. WATER WATER WATER.

🏃🏼‍♀️: CROSS TRAINING. Your runs are important but SO IS CROSS TRAINING. You need to lift to build strong legs to sustain your runs. You need to build mobility to avoid injury. YOU NEED TO ALWAYS WARM UP AND STRETCH BEFORE AND AFTER RUNS. Unlike other sports, your body is your only piece of equipment. If you go too hard too fast, you will hurt your equipment.

🏃🏼‍♀️: RUNNNNNNNS. There are a million training plans. Just find one and stick with it. Some of my favorite resources are the Nike Run Club (FREE), the Peloton app, and Hal Higdon Training Plans (FREE). The Peloton app runs have taught me form, breathing, and how to pace myself. As a beginner runner, this has been KEY. Also, find a local running club!!! Most of them are free and they’re a great way to meet people, push yourself, and run hard with a great group.
