CAREER ADVICE I WISH I KNEW EARLIER 🧠💡

On today’s edition of #Adulting101, I share some #careeradvice that I wish I knew earlier.

1. DO EVERYTHING, TRY EVERYTHING 🤯

In middle and high school, I’ve always been the type of person who loved exploring new activities, interests and hobbies. My parents and teachers at the time would keep telling me that I should focus all of my attention on one thing, because “Jack of all trades, master of none.” Growing up however, I’ve realised that this saying isn’t necessarily true, and is missing the essential ending; “Better than a master of one.”

I’ve grown to learn that all the little skills I’ve picked up over time (no matter how small or seemingly unrelated) have helped me in my career thus far. It’s hard to pinpoint one exact thing as I’m writing this, but there have been so many times in my life where I’ve thought to myself: who would’ve thought this COMPLETELY RANDOM skill would help me today?

2. BE WILLING TO DO THINGS OUTSIDE OF YOUR JOB SCOPE 💻📝

Of course it’s wise to practice some level of discernment when it comes to this, I’m not saying that you should completely disregard your personal and professional boundaries. If you’re given the opportunity to take on more responsibility in your current role, I’d say try! While I do agree that you should always be paid for your time, some of the unpaid opportunities I took on in my role helped me to grow and learn and develop some level of presence in the beginning. If it can and will be beneficial for you in the long term, it’s worth a shot.

3. SURROUND YOURSELF WITH PEOPLE HUNGRY FOR GROWTH 🌱🌴

Nothing will hold you back more than people who complain as a default. People who want to grow will find every will and every way to either overcome their circumstances or get out of it. More often than not they’ll be happy to help and support you on your journey too. Find people who drive you to do and be better, and stick by them.

BONUS: THERE’S NOTHING WRONG WITH PUTTING YOURSELF OUT THERE ✨

When I first started my career I was so afraid of putting myself out there, posting more and just being in the spotlight because I didn’t want to come off as arrogant. Now I’ve been granted the gift of hindsight I realise that putting yourself out there isn’t being arrogant at all: it’s a courageous thing to want to put yourself out there and share what you’re doing with the rest of the world. Sure, you might be subject to all kinds of criticism and judgment, but the people who resonate with you will follow.
