I started going to the gym when I was in secondary school & with almost zero knowledge about working out in the gym, I made a lot of mistakes that had killed my gains, & even worse, injured myself many times. Here’s some tips about working out in the gym so you do not end up like me :)

1. HURTS HURTS HURTS

If an exercise in the gym is causing you a lot of pain or a lot of pain after you go home, (not the sore kind of pain), just don’t do the exercise anymore. You might have a pre existing injury that you just don’t know & if you carry on through the pain you might hurt yourself until you need surgery/chronic pain. Don’t force yourself to do the exercise because some YouTuber or gymbro tells you it’s the best for muscle growth, everyone is different and so are the exercises that are ideal for them.

2. STOP WAITING FOR FRIENDS, GO ALONE

Of course going with friends is the best as you get company, motivation etc. but if you choose to only go the gym when your friend goes then you would not be training your body at an optimal pace. You want to hit at least a certain volume for each muscle group and if waiting for your friends cause you not to go gym enough to hit those volumes, then it will take way longer to achieve your ideal physique. If you need someone to spot I am sure there are plenty of gymbros that are willing to help.

3. STOP SPAMMING BICEP CURLS

Most teenagers love to train biceps a lot because it feels like it would give us gigantic arms. Stop it, biceps are such a small muscle group (1/3 of the arm, 2/3 is triceps), it is quite pointless to do so much biceps in a week. Focus more on the larger muscle groups such as back, legs, chest & shoulders.

4. TIME

Me and my friends used to spend at least 2-3 hours in the gym and that is definitely too much, you should aim to keep your workouts <1h! It may seem hard at first but it’s definitely possible if you increase your intensity of your workout, do supersets, maybe spend less time scrolling TikTok between sets & you’ll have a productive workout!

5. PATIENCE

Many of us stop gymming because we do not see results after one week or so. Achieving your ideal body takes time, remember “Rome wasn’t built in a day”. Just stay consistent for at least 3 months with the right diet & you will definitely see some results that will really push you to gym even more.

Anyways, be proud that you going to the gym, you could be mindlessly scrolling TikTok, binge watching shows but you choose to go to the gym and make the best out of yourself.
