hi zesties 🍋

it’s quite surreal that it’s been 1 year since i learnt dancing. i started my dance journey in uni y1, which is objectively a lot later than MOST dancers.

when i first entered uni, i was surrounded by lots of amazing dancers - people who have had YEARS of experience. naturally, i was scared and terrified of how i was going to catch up to them.

my first exposure to dance was in arts rag, which was a really wholesome and supportive experience as i made many many valuable friends there. these friends i still hold close to my heart today 💓 it was them who introduced me to how fun and fulfilling dancing can be and i set out a goal for myself to learn dancing!

as school started, i learnt about the many different CCAs NUS had to offer, and eventually joined nus jazzttitude 🥹❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️🌟🌟🌟 they’re super beginner friendly (as u can see because i got in 😭😭😭) and the environment is so so wholesome and supportive 🥹

in jztd trainings, i learnt a lot about isolations, weight shifts, and body control + more that i definitely wouldn’t have been able to learn on my own. and i also really loved and admired street jazz/girls style dancers so this cca was perfect for me! i also had my first ever choreo class (where they teach a choreo in about 1h) in jztd, and i struggled so so so badly….

to help curb that, i started attending a lot of open classes at converge and o school! i started out at converge because their student package is so worth ($45 for 5 classes = $9 per class!) meanwhile o school is my current fav @ $12 per class for students ($36 for 3 classes)!

after a bit of drilling and hard work… i managed to catch choreos a lot better than when i first started out, and i even joined my first ever dance production under jztd (you can catch it on youtube to see what we do “escapade hues of you jazzttitude” 🤭)

either way, im really very thankful for all the support i got from my friends and instructors, and i wouldn’t have been able to come this far without their trust and patience 😣

please check nus jztd out if you’re in nus this year, because we’re always looking for passionate ppl (even beginners!) 🥰🥰

TLDR:

I ONLY STARTED DANCE LAST YEAR (exactly a year ago) and in order to catch up to my peers, i joined a beginner friendly cca + attended open classes with friends!

there have been times i get demoralised because i just feel so shit but NEVER let that get you down!!! take breaks when you need them too so your body doesn’t tire out! just keep trying, and it’s especially important for us late bloomers to lay out our foundations and find out what we’re weak in 🥹 so we can work on it.

truth is as late bloomers we also need to work extra hard la compared to our peers 😣 so it’s really about training at a 100% when you can and also pushing yourself with different open classes. i’m still working on myself and might be attending more courses to improve on my weak points 😇

if you’re thinking of learning how to dance, but you’re not sure how to start or you’re scared, reach out! we can do this together :) cause i was in your exact position last year and i almost chose not to sign up for any CCAs cause i was so scared (thank god i signed up though)

check out nus jazzttitude on ig, tiktok, or at SLF/supernova on 15&16 aug hehehehehehe
