Today I wanted to talk about my tips and experience being 100% dairy free. I have a severe dairy allergy (not lactose. Like a real allergy) which forces me to be dairy free. However, I know a lot of people avoid dairy from being lactose or other health reasons. With the rise in veganism and dairy free alternatives, this is super popular lately so I want to share my experience and advice as someone who HAS to be dairy free!
- MILK ALTERNATIVE: lots of baking and cooking will require some sort of milk. There are so many dairy options now like oat, almond, cashew, hemp, etc. I like almond since itâs usually lowest in calories and isnât too heavy (oat milk upsets my stomach as someone with IBS)
- ALLERGEN BRANDS: if youâre new to being dairy free, a really easy way to start is purchasing foods from Allergen friendly brands. Brands such as Enjoy Life are free from all major allergens. This makes it easy to shop since you can quickly grab any product from these brands and know you are safe, without having to dissect a food label
- FOOD LABELS: I ALWAYS check labels- even if itâs something that âshouldnâtâ have dairy. With how things are processed nowadays, so many foods have surprising allergens! The âcontains:â section on food labels highlights major allergens, which makes it easier to read quickly when grocery shopping.
Many restaurants are accommodating as long as I explain my allergy (I specifically will say âno milk, butter, or cheeseâ) since a lot of people forget that butter, which is used very often for cooking, is a dairy product.
I hope this helps anyone who is new to being dairy free! Feel free to ask any questions. Itâs definitely an adjustment, but I am able to still eat out and eat yummy things! Just takes a few extra steps for precaution
