This one is for period-having people only! Whether you currently have one, or plan to have one. As everyone knows- being a girl is expensive! And having a period is even more expensive! SO here is how I both save money, help the environment, and help lessen my symptoms all at once. The menstrual cup/ disc (they are 2 different things, but saves the same purpose)
So before we jump into why you should use them or anything like that, let's take a look into the cost of everything. While I don’t know the average use of tampons/pads per month, I will tell you the cost of a relatively cheaper brand (versus a typically safer brand) AND the cost/lifetime use of a menstrual cup and disc so you can see the cost.
tampons: $8 for 34
pads: $8 for 32
’quality’ tampons: $10 for 30
‘quality’ pads: $12 for 56
Cup: $30 for 10 YEARS
disc: $30 for 10 YEARS
So as you can see, tampons and pads are cheaper in the short term aspect, but if we average that you use 20 per cycle, and its roughly about $0.24 per tampon, that’s $57.6 a year (give or take of course) on the cheaper end, and on the more expensive end it’s even worse. For a ‘quality’ brand of tampons- it's about $0.33 per tampon, so that’s about $79.2 a year! Which would be roughly $576-792 for 10 years, when a cup/disc could last 10 years, and only cost $30. The answer as to what’s cheapest is obvious. But is it really worth it? What are the benefits?
For me personally (and from other’s experiences) the cup is superior! Even above the disc. However, you HAVE to be comfortable with blood and your own body as both *can* get messy, the disc more than the cup. Here are a few benefits for the cup
portable/discreet
easy to use
less cramps
lasts up to 12 hours per use
comfortable
And here are some benefits for the disc
mess-free sex
less cramps
lasts longer than a tampon ( I wanna say these also can last up to 12 hours, but unsure)
Less cramps
And here are my downfalls to each, cup being first
can be messy (but not always)
Frustrating to learn at first (just until you know how to seal/break the seal)
have to wash it, not *always* ideal to do in public
and now the disc
depending on the guy and the disc you get, it might be too painful for him, for sex. Depending on if the disc is softer or more hard feeling
messy every time
HAVE to be comfortable with your fingers up you
For me, I kept having the disc slip down a lot and it would get uncomfortable but of course, I could have just not positioned it correctly
