BOOK REVIEW: THE CREATIVE ACT

The Creative Act: A Way of Being comes from Rick Rubin, an absolute legend in the music industry– he is the co-founder of Def Jam Records, founder of American Recordings and former co-president of Columbia Records.

Literally, the world of music would not be the same without him, which is what makes his advice so poignant. The man knows creativity and has fostered creativity in so many.

What I liked most about this book:

🌀 Structure: Each chapter was only 2-4 pages long. It’s less of a book and more of a collection of ideas. You could move around in the chapters, read a little bit everyday, or flip open to any random page and still get something meaningful out of it.

💡 Message: Rubin talks a lot about two things I really agree with. 1) creativity is for EVERYONE and 2) there is no room for competition in creativity. One of my favorite chapters was called “Non-Competition” because it was such a good reminder that there is room for everyone in the creative process.

Some of the “advice” were ideas you’ve probably heard a bunch of times before, so I won’t say this is groundbreaking or anything, but, it was still a really digestible and inspiring read.
