Tips for how to deal with driving anxiety after an accident!
I was involved in a car accident the fall of 2019 after a drunk driver rear ended me on the interstate. It was the first time I was involved in a car accident, so it was a bit traumatic and it was also terrifying because we were on a bridge at night with cars constantly driving past us at high speeds. Thankfully I didnโt get seriously injured, but my car was totaled and I was nervous to get back on the road.
The first time I had to drive again I was so anxious. I obsessed over monitoring drivers behind me, I braked waaayy too often, and my heart raced any time someone drove close to my car. I knew I had to double down and find ways to ease back into driving normally again. Hereโs some tips that helped me:
๐Tip 1: Avoid Busy Routes
Start back driving around your neighborhood, places that arenโt traffic heavy and where speed limits are low.
๐Tip 2: Breathe
Trying breathing techniques helps relieve stress and anxiety. If you get overwhelmed take some deep breaths to regain control.
๐Tip 3: Talk About It
Confide in someone you feel comfortable talking to. Accidents happen and knowing someone understands how you feel or have been through a similar situation helps. They may be able to help you feel comfortable again.
๐Tip 4: Be Cautious
For me, it helped tremendously to pay attention to cars 2 cars ahead of me. It helped my reaction time if the car in-front of me wasnโt paying enough attention. Which made me feel more secure with my driving.
๐Tip 5: Give Yourself Grace
Remind yourself that itโs okay to not be okay. You have to take it one step at a time and be patient with yourself. Youโll get back in the groove of things and if youโre still having trouble, therapy is always a good option. A therapist can provide assistance tailored to your individual needs.
Hope this helps! You got this! ๐ซถ๐ฝ๐.
