In #MyFreeTime, I like to skate. I haven’t done much of it lately, but 2 years ago I was really really into skating.

Why? You keep fit while having fun. Running can be very dull at times. I always try to avoid running as much as I can, and would rather seek out other sports involving running (like soccer, basketball). I was first exposed to skating as a child by my parents, but lost interest after a while. Then, during Uni, I joined NUS Skating Club, where I started to love skating again. Especially when you’re going at high speeds with the wind blowing in your face - it’s quite the unbeatable feeling, vs. running where you’re limited by your legs. Sure, it isn’t going to burn AS MUCH calories as running but it’s a close second.

Because you’re travelling at such speeds, you also get to cover more ground in a short period of time. The ample amount of park connectors in Singapore allows you to travel cross-island on skates easily.

Skating is also surprisingly easy to learn! With the right guidance, in a few sessions, you can go from wobbling on skates to skating smoothly. It is often seen as an alternative to running for older adults with joint issues because it provides cardiovascular training without straining your knee joints (in running).
