I honestly didn’t even realize that I had a poor relationship with food until about 2-3 years after I moved out of my parents house. I realized I had no idea how to fuel my body - how to grocery shop for myself, how to make decisions that supported my nourishment as well as my goals.
It wasn’t until after I had competed that I realized the severity of my relationship with food.
I don’t want to go into details about that - more so the steps I took to improve my relationship with food - and can proudly say I have no more binges, and can genuinely feel full, and not view food as simply calories (while still loving my body!).
1. PRACTICE REFRAMES: The biggest one for me was reminding myself that the food is always there, and at any point in time I can choose to have it. Often something I see is “I cut out x,y,z” - cutting out food or food groups can lead to feelings of deprivation. Instead - I allow myself to have whatever I want, whenever I want…. Giving me much more freedom.
2. FOCUSED ON HEALTH: This is a huge one - focusing on nourishment and healthy hormones - allowed me to take the focus off eating just low calorie. When we eat for our health, out bodies thank us - we look and feel SO much better.
3. HONORED MY HUNGER AND FULLNESS SIGNALS: If you are not honoring your hunger signals - why would you listen when your body is telling you it is full? I sometimes will have to ask myself “am I really not hungry - or is this conditioning” I opt for well rounded meals - rather than mindless snacking!
It’s not easy, and these are just some of the steps - it takes time and working with professionals (if that is necessary for you!), but its very possibly & that is what I want to remind you of. Even to this day I will reference back to some of my reframes, check in with myself, my goals, and always make sure I am leading with my health!
