Traveling to Japan for the first time? Here are some helpful tips! But, if there’s one tip to actually make your trip easier, it’s luggage forwarding when traveling to different cities! Here’s a more in-depth experience and how this made our trip easy peasy!

🧳 Luggage forwarding has helped us tremendously on our trip! We went to Tokyo, Okinawa, Osaka, and back to Tokyo. We only spent a few days in Okinawa so we took a carry on instead, and shipped our suitcases from our Tokyo hotel to our Osaka hotel.

This service is not free, so prices can cary based on size of luggage, amount to be delivered, etc. You’ll have to bring your luggage down to the front desk by a specific time in order to get sent out, depending when you need to send it or retrieve it by, so check with the hotel! I would also check the receiving hotel if they can accept your luggage to ensure they can hold on to it if you plan to arrive the following day. Further cities may require more time for the luggage to arrive, so keep that in mind too and bring a carry on bag as you won’t have your luggage.

We sent our luggage back to Tokyo from Osaka about 1-2 days before we left Osaka so that it would arrive in Tokyo on time.

Lastly - our flight back home was a redeye which means we had plenty of time to explore from the time we checked out of our hotel in the morning. We forwarded our luggage from our Tokyo hotel TO THE AIRPORT! This was SO HELPFUL because it allowed us to explore Japan just a little more before going to the airport. We went to Shibuya to spend our last hours and so we did have to use the lockers for our carry on bags since we had to send out luggage the night before. Before heading to the airport, we grabbed our bags from the lockers and took the train to the airport - which takes you literally in the airport!

This was my family’s first time to Japan and I can’t imagine us having to carry around our suitcases around in the train station, because it can get very hectic! It’s also super inconvenient to have it on the trains.

What are your biggest travel hacks for Japan? ☺️
