The Real Cost of the Beauty Industry

The beauty industry is so heavily marketed towards women, and I succumb to it more times than I care to admit. And I don’t think that’s necessarily a bad thing, but I do think it’s important to reflect on why we want these goods and services and then prioritize some of them, not all of them.

Back before I prioritized personal finance, I was a beauty services girly! I was spending almost $8k a year, and at the time my take home pay was less than $50k - meaning I was spending 16% of my pay on the beauty industry!

Once I started tracking my spend and saw how much money I was pouring out, I reeled it in a little bit. I currently just get my nails and hair regularly done and wax occasionally. Now that I manage my spending better, I’m able to invest the $5k difference between pre and post financial literacy. If I keep that up for 20 years, I’ll have over $250k more in my investment accounts than if I kept spending frivolously!
