My Work Day As a CMA!

Due to HIPPA and patient confidentiality, I am not allowed to take pictures of my patients or of me interacting with patients , that is why I focused my pictures on the “behind the scenes” tasks that I do when I’m not working directly with patients.

Moreover, I wanted to share a little bit about what I do for a living. Currently I am a Certified Medical Assistant in a Family Medicine clinic.

In a Family Medicine we see patients that range in ages anywhere from Newborns-Geriatric. That means we see a little bit of everything and there is something different everyday! I love working in Family medicine because I’m getting hands-on learning experience that’ll help me advance in the medical field as I continue my education to pursue a career in nursing.

To become a CMA, I went through a 9 month program where I earned my certifications in BLS (basic life support, which means I’m CPR and AED certified), phlebotomy and became certified as a medical assistant.

A little bit of the basics of what I do at my job includes taking vitals, give vaccines, assist providers in patient care, & even assist in minor surgical procedures.

As I mentioned earlier, we see a little bit of everything. This means visit types can be anything such as:

•Acute illness visits

•Mental Health Care

•women’s health exams such as breast exams and birth control counseling and birth control prescriptions/insertions, Pap smears, colposcopies

•OB care

•Minor surgical procedures such as cyst or toenail removals, cryotherapy, biopsies

•Well Child Checks

•Diabetes care

•Hypertension care

•literally any concern you might have that you just want to talk to a healthcare professional about

If you are someone who is wanting to join the medical field but don’t know where to start, I highly recommend becoming a Medical Assistant to start off. You learn so much about the medical field and it gives you a good idea of what direction you want to go. Not only that, but if you simply don’t want to continue years and years of school, it’s also a great career to stay with!
