round 3 of classpass studios review! this time round - shoutout to all girls who are afraid of hitting the gym because you aren't sure of what to do/the stares when you're using the gym equipment! time to save this post for a conducive & safe environment to build your muscles βΊοΈ
i'm literally one of the girls who is scared of hitting the gym because no one taught me how to use the equipments before i met my partner & i hate getting stared at π© but attending workouts at these studios helped me with muscle building & the instructors provide me with guidance on improving my form!!
ππ» haus athletics
β’ they have a total of 2 studios - one at OUE downtown gallery & one at cross street exchange, i frequent the former outlet due to convenience
β’ my first class there was leanout - total body endurance which combines strength & endurance, and omg i died π₯² also because my friend who brought me there didn't tell me that there was cardio π but my instructor was a super nice person & she guided me through my exercises and helped me gained confidence in the workout process
β’ my subsequent classes were all dominate - strength based, because that's what i really wanted to train for & i swear i always ache the next day π
β’ the instructors are super duper friendly & nice, they help you correct your form & ensure that you keep at your comfortable pace for newcomers, and push your limits a little more for those existing students ππ» they even join in your pictures π€ͺ highly recommend eunice!! βΊοΈ
β’ the weights are very inclusive & i can easily find my comfort zone, and a push
β’ they have a variety of classes available - with the other 3 being meltdown, remixed & base (core focused). other than weekdays have the same types of classes, the weekends can mixed with all the different classes so the schedule is quite accommodating π₯³
β’ showering facilities, towels & water cooler are all available so all you need to do is bring your bottles & come in your workout gear
ππ» boombuild
β’ it's a 40-minute strength-based HIIT workout that focuses on endurance, strength building & cardio
β’ depending on the week, the primary focus of the class shifts from strength, to endurance, to power but there'll be an element of each for a holistic exercise
β’ we went for the strength session & it was purely focused on dumbbells but boy, it gave us a good sweat π₯Ή class was split into 4 sections - warm ups, em3om3 (complete the exercises within a time limit & if you finished it earlier, the remaining time is recovery), amrap (as many reps as possible) & time round. for EM3OM3, you focus on going heavier on the weights & AMRAP focuses on hitting alot of reps within the time limit & time round is 20s work 10s recovery
β’ i love how detailed my instructor is with his demonstrations & making sure that everyone is in the correct form during the exercises
β’ the class size is very small (max 8 pax) & the room size is super small too but it did give me an intimidating feel - also because boOm does it by first come first serve, so we ended up in front of the mirrors (which i didn't mind at all in fact i love mirrors π€ͺ)
β’ as usual the weights jump by a 2-3kg interval, so it might be tough for some (i had 4, 6 & 8kgs for the workout)
β’ they have quite limited boombuild classes & the focus only changes with every week - that's something that i didn't really like
β’ showering facilities, towels & water cooler are all available so all you need to do is bring your bottles & come in your workout gear
ππ» barry's
β’ this studio has 2 outlets - orchard gateaway & raffles place, and i personally prefer the OG one!
β’ their workouts are total death because there's the treadmill portion where you go for sprints at 11-12mph π± tbh a newbie to functional strength training would be scared because it's difficult to catch up & easy to feel intimated too π₯²
β’ also because i prefer more strength-based training, so if i can, i'd try to opt for double-floor: focusing on just weights, repeating the exercises twice
β’ the class structure is split into half the class doing treadmill while the other half doing weights, and then there'll be switches for 2-3 times depending on the instructor's preference
β’ their instructors are super top-notched too & usually quite encouraging, but because the class size is q big, so it's difficult for them to coach you on the form all the time
β’ they have a good variety of class types - arms & abs; total body; chest, back and abs; abs & ass; full body (upper focus); full body (lower focus) but it's only for 1 day
β’ showering facilities, towels & water cooler are all available + there's even a bar for smoothies (which taste great btw π)
ππ» ground zero resistance
β’ it's a 45 minutes session focusing on endurance, strength & power
β’ they have a variety of class types available - focus (each pod targets a specific muscle group, low reps & heavy weights + cardio included); impact (focus on agility, animal movement & olympic-style lifting); rapid fire (cardio based time rounds); blitz (partner workouts)
β’ went for a focus class when i just started my strength training but it feels almost like i went for an f45/bft session π© it's quite difficult & didn't help that i'm not v sure of how to do some stations so the instructor had to guide me quite abit on my form π₯²
β’ the instructor was quite good in what he's doing but i didn't really feel encouraged throughout the workout session π₯Ή
β’ showering facilities, towels & water cooler are all available but to use the showroom, it's only available in the mall not the studio!
overall;
my personal preference is haus athletics because of the environment & how the instructors make it a comfortable space to workout. for beginners to strength training, i'd highly recommend boombuild because of the small class size & how the instructor is better able to guide you ππ»
