During my recent visit, I received advice from my gynaecologist on women’s health which I found was really important to share. I think education on women’s health isn’t taught or talked about much especially among younger girls. Sex (health) education also seems like a topic tertiary institutions would rather not touch on. When I was studying in the US, they had regular events on sex education (and even gave out condoms to everyone for free??). Students could also easily get tested for STI’s for free.
The reason I brought up sex education is because cervical cancer is caused mainly by HPV, which is sexually transmitted.
Here’s what my gynaecologist told me:
1. Get your HPV vaccine as soon as possible
It would be best to get it before you become sexually actively but better late than never. You have to get 3 jabs but it’s heavily subsidised by the government. If you possess a CHAS card, it’s free!
2. Get regular Pap smears
My gynaecologist told me you should get Pap smears when you start being sexually active. Like literally the age you started being sexually active. Not just during the phases when you exit your so-called celibacy 🤣 (Pap smear is a form of cervical cancer screening).
3. Always use condoms
They’re NOT just used to prevent pregnancy. They prevent STDs. Unless your partner (including your long-term partners) has tested and are negative for STDs, keep wearing condoms!!!
