Hey Zesties!! ๐ By now, Iโm pretty sure most of you wouldโve heard of ABC Cooking Studio, widely known for their pretty affordable trial lessons. ๐คย Well, today Iโm not here to share my experience on the trial lesson, but rather my experience and thoughts after signing a package with them. This is gonna be a pretty in-depth one so prepare yourself ๐คฃ
To start off, my friend and I signed a package which has a mix of all three categories - Cooking, Bread and Cake. We signed for a Novice plan which consists of a total of 24 classes, and paid a bit over 2k, including a $70 membership fee ๐ธย (trial lesson discounted price) Along with the package, we were given a free apron, cooler bag, as well as a โpassportโ - this allows us to enjoy a free cooking class in any other country with this studio (e.g., Japan, Malaysia, Korea) Our package is valid for 2 years 8 months, but got extended 4 months due to CB.

When you go for a lesson, you are expected to reach about 10-15minutes before the actual time, as the instructors usually has other students in a class (1 instructor to 4 students) and would start right on time. There are also lockers provided, where you can keep your personal belongings before class ๐
Each class is 2 hours, and when it starts, the instructors would usually briefly go through the ingredients and some steps before any actual baking or cooking. The one thing I love about this place is that the ingredients are always prepped for you already, so you rarely have to weigh or portion out anything! โ๏ธย During the class, youโll learn and pick up skills, as well as learn reasons for using certain ingredients or techniques.
Depending on the complexity of the recipe, some classes may end earlier, or some a bit over 2 hours. For cooking classes, you can choose to eat in the studio, or bring it home. If you choose to eat in, there are seats, and free flow drinks (coffee, tea or canned drinks) โย For bread and cake lessons, I always bring my bakes home, but do note that you need to bring your own bags and containers (tbh Iโm not sure if they changed it, but they used to charge for containers)

Classes are relatively easy to book, as one recipe would have slots everyday for a month, with 1-2 time slots in a day. Slots usually release about a month before on a daily basis, but recipes or instructors that are more popular would tend to get snatched up faster so itโs good to check often for what you want!
They also have a relatively new outlet at Jewel, bringing the total number of studios to 4. Iโve tried Funan, Taka and Westgate, but my favourite is definitely Funan, as itโs the most spacious. My friend has told me the Jewel outlet is really pretty, but itโs too far for me ๐ฅฒย If you canโt find a slot for a certain recipe, you can always check the other outlets too! More often than not, at least one would have what youโre looking for ๐

Tbh, I think the main reason we decided to sign the package was because of how amazing our trial lesson instructor was. She explained the steps really thoroughly, and was able to answer all our questions with ease. However, with that said, throughout the course of my package, Iโve definitely experienced 1 or 2 that were a bit subpar - e.g., donโt explain the steps much, or rush through lessons. However, I think my positive experiences outweigh my negative ones so youโre pretty safe!

I touched on this a bit above already but as mentioned, classes are only 2 hours each. For cooking, this is usually more than enough time, so classes are usually very well paced, and also often end early. However, for bread and cooking (especially bread), as the steps usually require more attention to detail or down time (e.g., for dough to proof), lessons are a bit more rushed! I wonโt go as far as to say that the lesson quality is compromised, but youโll definitely have lesser time to practice or clarify doubts with the instructor!

They offer a decent variety for you to choose from each month (8 to 16 recipes, depending on category) so you donโt need to worry about running out. The quality of recipes are also pretty good, most are actually really tasty, and are things that I would make again.
On top of that, if you complete a minimum number of classes with them (e.g. 24 for bread), you can also take on more advanced packages, called Riche and Master, which teaches you recipes that are more complicated like Croissants ๐ฅ

While the classes have been a really good experience, 2k is really steep (especially since I signed this when I was a broke poly student fml) ๐ตโ๐ซ If you do have the spare cash, this is a great way to pick up and hone your skills, or just act as a bonding activity for your friends or family!
If youโre thinking of signing, I would say the bread and cake packages are the best bang for your buck, since these are harder to learn by yourself at home. Their trial lessons are super worth imo ($30 for member referral, $35 for non-peak) and also acts as a good gauge for the actual classes themselves. If you have any other questions, feel free to ask away and happy baking ๐ช
