This one’s for anyone who has burnout in their 9-5 🥵

It only took me one year to feel completely burnt out in my 9-5. I was working long hours and feeling SO DRAINED by my job. I remember feeling like whoaaa, this can’t be my life!!! These are the habits and boundaries I worked to establish that changed that forever 😊

💥Working from wherever I wanted to on my “work from home” days. After covid, many jobs (including mine) went to part-time remote. At first, I was just working from my kitchen table or bed all the time, which was fine some days, but other days left me feeling like I was stuck in the house, or like it was too hard to escape my work. So I started going to a cafe for the first few hours in the morning to work from there, and it was game changing! I felt so much more energized, and it was an amazing way to break up the day. Now, I just do whatever feels best that day - whether it’s working from my house, a friend’s house, a cafe, a bookstore, or outside ☀️

💥NOT WORKING MORE THAN WHAT I GET PAID FOR, which in my case, is 40hrs/week. This one took a lot of practice and boundary setting, because I was always taught to work hard (and I still do), and definitely struggled with perfectionism (which really just stems from the fear of failure). I adopted the mentality that I am completely capable of doing my job and doing it well, so if I couldn’t get something done in the allotted time, it wasn’t a reflection on me - it was a reflection on the company, my manager, or the situation. And therefore, it wasn’t up to me to work more hours than I get paid for to fix their mistake. I got realllyyyy comfortable with communicating to my supervisors exactly why something wasn’t going to be done on time, or if it needed to be done on time, why it would be to a lower standard than I would typically like. Know your worth ❤️

💥Making it known that I loved to travel, and saying YES to all travel opportunities that came my way. The first opportunity I had to travel for work didn’t seem that exciting (going to Michigan), but it was a great change of pace and also opened up the doors for me to later go to Germany and Mexico! Every time I went on a business trip, I extended my trip by at least 1 or 2 days to explore the area, and it was such a great opportunity to explore a new place at very little personal cost 😍

💥Doing whatever I wanted during my lunch break on in-office days. Who says you have to go out to lunch, eat at your desk, or eat at the cafeteria? Just because everyone else does DOESN’T mean you have to! When I realized this, I started doing things on my lunch break that truly fueled me: eating lunch in the park, going to the beach, going to a yoga class, etc. If this meant taking a longer lunch, so be it. As long as I wasn’t missing any meetings, and still working my 40hrs, who cares how long my lunch break is? 🧘‍♀️

💥Hacking my in-office time so that I was there during events, outings, free food, etc. Because honestly, if I didn’t need to be in the office for a meeting, testing, etc. then they needed to give me a reason to want to come in. I learned that my time is valuable, and started acting accordingly 😎

💥Prioritizing my self-care. I made sure to stop opening my laptop first thing in the morning, and instead took my precious morning time for ME before giving it to a corporation. I adopted the mentality that I honor myself FIRST, because if I don’t, who will? Plus, I realized I was way more productive at work after taking the time to meditate, journal, and relax in the morning 🌸
