🥊Chemical vs Mineral Sunscreen - What’s the diff?

It’s summer and the weather’s been heating (well at least in other countries since it’s summer all year round in sg 🤣) and that means more SUNSCREEN content! With more sunscreen options out there in the market, we finally have elegant formulations that don’t irritate or skin or leave us with a nasty whitecast. But that also leaves us with more consumer fatigue. Are you confused with the terms “mineral” and “chemical” sunscreen? Here’s a quick guide to help you decide which would be the more suitable option for you:

☀️UV Filters:

M: Zinc oxide, Titanium dioxide

C: Tinosorb S, Avobenzone, Oxybenzone, Homosalate, Uvinul A…

👍🏽 The ‘good’:

M: Less sensitising (more suitable for sensitive skin!), Tinted options (Helps to provide UV protection while providing some slight coverage)

C: More elegant formulations, No whitecast

👎🏽 The ‘bad’:

M: Whitecast, Majority have thicker textures

C: Higher probability of causing skin sensitivity

✔️Mineral: Axis-Y No Stress Physical Sunscreen

- As you can tell from the disparity in size of my chemical vs physical sunscreen collection, you prob can tell I very much prefer Chemical sunscreens! But this is probably the ONLY mineral sunscreen that I genuinely enjoy. This creamy SPF blends in easily into my skin, leaving a slight whitecast on initial application but it goes away once this sets. This also contains other skin-beneficial & anti-inflammatory ingredients such as mugwort, 2% niacinamide & squalane hence I always go back to this sunscreen whenever my skin is feeling a little more sensitive. This is definitely on the more matte side, and it can be drying for dry skin types, so do make sure you layer up with more hydrating products under this!

✔️Chemical: Banana Boat Aqua Daily Moisture Sunscreen

- A new sunscreen favourite of mine in this recent year! This comes as a water gel form that is lightweight & easily spreadable on the skin. This is also just emollient enough for this to double as a lightweight moisturiser! I love the natural dewy finish this leaves that doesn’t transition into greasiness by the end of the day. This is also pretty affordable too!

At the end of the day, it’s about finding a sunscreen that’s going to make you want to apply, and reapply your sunscreen. I hope this guide helps 🥰
