Let’s make IV medications!!

As a pharmacy technician who works at a hospital in an inpatient setting, sometimes I will work in our sterile processing area also known as the SPA.

My job there, is to batch IV medications that are used often to store in our main pharmacy. I also will make patient specific IV medications as they are ordered.

Working in the SPA takes special training in sterility. Since these medications are going straight into patients’ blood streams there is a very high risk for infection if sterility is broken, which is why there is a separate room for the medication production.

Usually, I can make hundreds of medications a day. Today, I was only needed to make a few batches so the team could catch up with the workload.
