I visited #Seoul and travelled alone for 4D4N while waiting for my friend to join me from Busan, during December last year.
My experiences:
1. Solo Shopping 🛍 $$-$$$
• Most of my 4 days were spent shopping around neighbourhoods like Gangnam, Apgujeong Rodeo, Myeongdong and Bukchon Hanok areas which weren’t too crowded on weekdays
💡Tips
• Find my iPhone DOES NOT WORK in Korea, I sent my Whatsapp location to my family while I walked around to ensure my safety
• Navigation is SO CRUCIAL in a foreign country! If you get lost easily or have a lot of trouble reading maps,
not recommended to travel alone yet
• Bring a foldable backpack for purchases, not fun to carry paper bags on the train during peak hour
2. Eating Alone 🍸 $$-$$$
• On cafe hopping day, I ate small portions at each cafe so I won’t get full and can try more food
• Won’t be able to eat sharing foods: I tried ordering fried chicken for 1 and the smallest portion cost almost $30 SGD and I couldn’t finish it 😅
3. Visit Galleries 🖼 $
• Exhibitions in Seoul are quite big (compared to SG) and this one at DDP took me 1.5h to complete.
• Vieweing art alone without any distractions and noise was a very introspective and inspiring experience
4. Manicures 💅🏻 $$
• Had a lot of free idle time hence decided to get my nails done
• Made an appointment for a nail salon in Hongdae via KakaoTalk and my friend helped me to place a deposit using Korean bank transfer
• Really smooth and fast experience: 45000 KRW manicure done in 45 mins
Tips: If you don’t have access to any KR bank accs, try to find nail salons that don’t require deposits
🌟 Overall experience solo travelling
• MONEY: Always have excess cash on you and excess money in your overseas card
• PORTABLE CHARGERS: I ended up bringing THREE portables out because of how much I used my phone (chats + music + location + navigation), super important to keep your phone charged for navigation
• BOOKS/JOURNALS: got a bit lonely after the second day scrolling social media all the time, so bring a book to read/prepare a journal to draw/write in
• TRIPOD: my best friend… no one to help me take pictures & too paiseh to stop passerbys
• 10/10 experience overall & I would really recommend Seoul as a solo travelling destination
