THIS CAVE HAS A LAKE AND HANGING TABLE??!?

Visiting Margaret River in Western Australia? There are many touristy spots in the area for nature lovers and visiting the caves here is one spot you shouldn't miss!

Because of our schedule, we could only pick one cave to visit during our road trip and the Lake Cave had more remaining time slots!

Our guide was very chatty and knowledgeable and shared a lot of history and pointed out interesting formations + had amazing photo skills too??? I was in awe at the huge natural hanging table and the glittering black water- the experience felt a little bit like we were descending into the grotto in Aladdin and a dragon or magical beast would pop out at any moment.

The guide did switch the lights off for a full minute which was awe-inspiring! It enhanced all the sounds so you could hear drips of water all around- things you wouldn't hear or notice with the lights on!

We had a few kids on our tour and the darkness can be quite scary. One of them kept crying the moment we descended into the cave, and the 360 steps down can be a tiring climb down and up so you may want to reconsider if you have very young kids/ elderly/ are very unfit or have pre-existing medical conditions. Everyone was quite out of breath climbing back up, even the sporty guys on my trip 😅

I highly recommend picking either Lake Cave or Jewel Cave if you enjoy guided tours, and would like to learn more about the crystal formations and history about the area, and if you prefer to explore on your own, Ngilgi Cave & Mammoth Cave will be better for you. I would only pick Mammoth Cave if you have kids or elderly as it is more family friendly and easier to walk around, with less steps. There is also a great interactive area and crawl space for kids!

As the Margaret River region extends from Busselton and Dunsborough through to Augusta in the South, that's a lot of driving time to consider as well! If you have no preference, pick a cave nearest to your accommodation to save on driving time. E.g. Ngilgi Cave to Jewel Cave is 1.5hours drive time apart!

Our Airbnb was right in the heart of Margaret River town and the drive to Lake Cave was roughly 20mins. If you are staying in Busselton, Dunsborough, or Yallingup, Ngilgi Cave is your closest cave, and you can save more driving time.

How to get there: Lake Cave is located in Forest Grove, ard 18km southwest of the town of Margaret River. There’s no public transportation to the cave, so you need to drive or join a guided tour.

Times: 9am-5pm daily (last booking will be 4pm)
