Recently i’ve been taking advantage of the “new year new me” mantra to rly PUSH myself to do some massive decluttering work for my room. The inertia is real when the mess has been around for so long… anyone feels me?😭

I’m not actually done yet (about halfway rn!) but here are some lessons i’ve learnt!

1) Change in consumption habits

I’ve become a very different consumer now as compared to my early twenties. I value high quality, high mileage pieces now and am willing to splurge on just a few big ticket items a year that i’m certain i really love. This is in comparison to my early twenties when i valued variety/quantity and would buy sooo many cheaper items cos it was trendy at the moment and i was experimenting with different styles. That phase was part of growing up and helped me understand my personal style better so I don’t regret it. But i’m past that phase now and i’m proud of myself for being able to let go of all these pieces from the past rationally!! Its a #GlowUp for sure💪

Tip: How to declutter rationally? Set a RULE! E.g if I haven’t used it at all in 1-1.5 years, it’s gotta go.

2) Being a non-hoarder is good for you

… in many ways! For one, giving away things to others who would use them/cherish them more is a great feeling. Giving is a sure mood lifter, for yourself and the receiving party:) For me, there’s personal satisfaction too when i’m able to detach myself from physical items. It’s a great reminder to focus more on the non tangible aspects of life like relationships and people, not on physical items. Of course, this is still a work in progress💪

3) An organized space = a better headspace

Seeing a clean and organised room definitely puts me in a MUCH better mood than when i walk into a messy, cluttered room. I never realised it but i think it affects my productivity and efficiency too. Clearing my work desk was a big win in that sense!

4) Decluttering makes me more resistant to spending

The next time i feel like spending, i’ll be reminded of all these bags of items that i gave away and that itself is a big deterrence to clicking that “cartout” button💪 “Do i want to add to the clutter again when i spent so much effort clearing it?!😵‍💫” I think i’ll be forced to sit on my decision longer and 1 month? 2 months? down the road that item is still in my cart and by then i can delete it away thinking, hey I didn’t really want that after all🤷‍♀️

Okie dokes it’s back to decluttering for me!!👋
