Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a form of imaging that does not use ionizing radiation. Instead, it uses a powerful magnet and radiofrequency waves to create highly detailed imaging. You obtain many images like CT, so you can scroll through many slices of imaging and create 3D reconstructions! Some studies use contrast as well.
Advantages
No ionizing radiation
Multiple planes (can do 3D reconstructions)
Very complex, advanced imaging with different phases and sequences that help with diagnosis
Very good for brain, spine, joints, and pelvic imaging
Safe for pregnant women and children
Disadvantages
More expensive than CT
Takes longer to perform than CT
Not safe for patients with metal implants or foreign bodies
Here is an example of a normal brain MRI!
Again, what is on the right side of the image is the patient’s left and vice versa!
The sagittal plane looks at the side of the head and face.
You can see the structures of the face, the brain, and the spinal cord in this view!
The axial plane is a transverse slice.
You can see the white matter, gray matter, and the bodies of the lateral ventricles.
Both are in the T1 sequence, but you don’t need to know these details yet as a premed!
