Several years ago, I worked at a startup in Singapore for a few months. During that time, I was subjected to a number of unfair employment practices, including not paying my full salary and no time off in lieu for work on weekends (for an office job) 😡😡

Won't share the name of the company, since it has since closed down and doesn't exist anymore — although the founder is now a mildly successful micro-influencer 👀

Anyway, I raised those issues with my manager at that time, but was ignored. Instead of allowing myself to be taken advantage of, I started collecting receipts of the unfair workplace practices 🧾

Once I've gathered enough evidence, I tendered my resignation and filed a complaint with the Ministry of Manpower (MOM)

HOW IT WORKS❓

As adviced my MOM, I raised my complaint with Tripartite Alliance for Dispute Management (TADM), a mediation service that helps employers and employees resolve workplace disputes.

The process of filing a complaint with TADM was relatively straightforward. I filled out an online form, provided details of my complaint, and paid the $10 application fee. I also attached foolproof evidence to support my claims such as my employment contract, payslips, conversations etc.

A TADM mediator then contacted my ex-company to schedule a mediation session, to be held at their office. The mediator from TADM was supposed to help us to discuss our differences and try to reach an agreement.

However, once my ex-company received the complaint and mediation notification, they reached out to me personally and agreed to pay me back wages they owed me, if I withdrew my application.

Money aside, I'm glad I reported my ex-company to MOM to prove that I was not a pushover just because I was young 😤

If you are experiencing unfair employment practices, I encourage you to speak up and file a complaint with MOM.

Here are some tips for reporting an employment dispute to MOM:

💫 Gather as much evidence as possible to support your complaint. This could include employment contracts, payslips, emails, or other documentation.

💫 Be clear and concise when explaining your complaint.

💫 Be prepared to negotiate a settlement agreement.

If you are unable to reach an agreement through mediation, you may be able to take your case to the Employment Claims Tribunal (ECT).

The ECT is an independent body that hears employment disputes. If your case is successful, you may be awarded compensation.
