3 top reasons we decided to not have kids ❌👶🏻

When my husband and I got together, we were pretty aligned on not having kids. Neither of us were particularly inclined towards giving up our child-free lifestyle to have a mini me.

Here are my personal top three reasons on not wanting a kid!

CAREER SACRIFICES 💼

Raising children can be a lot of work and time-consuming, especially so for us ladies who have to take time off work. I feel like raising a kid will not give me as much satisfaction as excelling at work would, so I don't want to risk my career for it.

Moreover, in Singapore, there's minimal parental leave, which means I'll have to leave my kiddo in the care of others instead of spending quality time with him or her. Then what's the point of having a kid?

BTO WAITING TIME 🏠

Ideally, if we were to have kids, I'd want one before I turn 30 so I can devout more energy to the kiddo and relate to him or her more. Unfortunately, as with most young Singaporeans, we're still waiting for our BTO flat to arrive. By the time we own a house, we'll be in our 30s — mid-30s even, if we wanted a few years of alone time before having a child.

DESIRE TO TRAVEL ✈️

Call me selfish, but I want to keep my options wide open and live life on my own terms. My husband and I love travelling and experiencing new cultures/food — we are not ready to give up our freedom to jet off anytime.

We know that our decision not to have kids is not for everyone, but it is the right decision for us. We are happy with our lives as they are, and we don't feel like we need to have children to be fulfilled. I'd rather regret not having a kid than regret having one. 🥹

That said, ultimately, the decision of whether or not to have kids is a personal one. There is no right or wrong answer, and what is right for one person may not be right for another. If you are considering whether or not to have kids, it is important to weigh all of your options and make the decision that is best for you.
