my kitchen island but...on WHEELS!

As a highly indecisive person, it brings me a certain level of calmness to know that a particular piece of furniture is not permanently fixed. Ironically, I was very sure that I wanted my kitchen island to be mobile and movable. Especially after all the hacking we did to make our main area spacious, having a fixed island would just limit the flexibility of our space.

You would think that adding wheels to a piece of furniture is easy because that’s what we thought also, “Just drill in wheels only. So easy”. During our ID hunt, out of about 10 or so firms we spoke to, only 2 were able to do this. Everyone else just straight out said no, “it’s not possible” “it’s too heavy” “the wheels won’t be able to hold the weight”

Even with this final firm that we eventually engaged, I was skeptical when they said it’s possible. Although one compromise we made was choosing to have KompacPlus as our countertop instead of Sintered stone to keep the weight lighter on the wheels.

So far, I love how I am able to move this island around! We use it as an extra prepping space, dining and was also able to host our families with a food spread. My only tiny little regret was not making it bigger 👉👈 but of course, that would have meant more money I don’t have 🫠

For context, my island dimensions are: 150cm x 80cm x 94cm(L x W x H)

My cabinet storage is smaller in size to have a recess area of about 20cm on all sides so that we could comfortably sit with enough leg space. And if we do intend to host more sitting guests, we’ll add foldable bar stools to add around the island.

Overall, I don’t regret this decision. In fact, I now have a couple more items on wheels and have no problems letting it take over my home. ugh, the convenience of rolling things around instead of carrying them is a 10/10. Wish I could add some wheels on myself too.
