I did up a drawing of the island in various views like front, back, side and plan views and ran through the design with my main contractor and subsequently the 70+ year old carpenter with his apprentice! Evoked the engineer in me as we discussed what is possible and what is not as I navigate between aesthetics and functionality, and taking in their point of view. Imagine 4 guys squatting around in bto and discussing and drawing out design on the floor, paper, cardboard. This is probably something you cannot get if you engaged an ID as you may have a 1000 imaginative ideas without knowledge and logic as to why certain things can't work and even if they work, they cannot be made to last long (<5y), etc due to constraints. (These are things that some IDs who only can design and not knowing the making process and just succumb to customer preference as they are not capable of advising what is not favourable and will not do so to make customers happy and pay for it!).

My sense when working with the older carpenter is that he is abit grumpy, scolds apprentice (I don't mind as he looks serious in making a product that is fit-for-purpose and to be durable from worksmanship pov) and may have a persistent way of thinking as he has eaten salt more than you eat rice then this is where we need to stretch them a little while taking in their views on stability of island etc. Eventually, they did the isometric view by hand which is easy to visualise. Yep, there is no fancy design software or whatsoever for visualisation but we dont need those. What matters is their worksmanship at the end of the day but only time will tell since materials are imported and not something within control:)
