Backbends are very stressful on the low back as they directly compress the joints into hyperextension. This can increase risk for injury and cause pain…BUT they are so fun to do! so as long as you perform them safely and properly you should be good 🙂

 It is important that before you get into a backbend you warm up the spine properly in all of its ranges of motions. The spine moves into flexion, extension, lateral flexion to the right and left, and rotation. You can get into a forward fold, do some cat cows, twists, side bends, and so on!

Then when actually getting into the bend, your glute should kick on as soon as you start going back. By using the glute muscles it creates a more active stretch instead of passive, and helps to protect the low back because the glutes are working to support it!
