I guess I know why this place closed down

My date surprised me with a dinner at a mermaid-themed restaurant last September, having read some exciting reviews online.

The restaurant is fairly new, and we noticed the owners around, actively managing the staff. At first glance, the place felt more like an underwater pub. However, the decor and tableware felt a bit cheap, with room for upgrades to really bring the underwater theme to life.

We weren’t very hungry, so we opted to share an appetizer, main, and dessert:

1. Grilled Squid - Unfortunately, it never arrived, despite reminders to the waitstaff.

2. Steak with Fries - 5/10. The steak was tough and underseasoned. For the price, we expected more; even Aston’s steak was tastier and more tender. The fries were passable but could have used more seasoning.

3. Cinnamon Donuts - 2/10. They were dry, crumbly, and largely flavorless.

4. Orange Juice - 10/10. Refreshing and well-made, thankfully!

5. Mermaid Signature Cocktail - 0/10. It was undrinkable, and my date ended up ordering wine instead.

We also had to ask for water rather than being served immediately.

I’m unsure if the food standards were lower because they just opened or if it was just an off night.

The mermaid performance was a nice touch, but seating further from the front limited our view, rating it 6/10 from our angle. It seemed family-friendly, as the kids nearby enjoyed the show.

The live band was definitely the highlight. The singer mainly performed Mandarin songs but had a great voice. Different artists and performances are scheduled on various days, making this a nice drinking spot in the west for friends who enjoy live music.
