The good and ugly side of work 🥲

Hey zesties!

Continuing on my career sharing, today i’ll be sharing about the good and the ugly side of my work! As shared earlier, I work in the social work/ healthcare industry and mainly do house visits to seniors.

Let’s start off with the good things:

✨ Learning nuggets of wisdom and listening to their stories

We talk to many seniors in our arena of work and ofc they have lots of experience and wisdom to share with us. They have been through way more than me and definitely good to hear from them. Often times, I takeaway valuable and insightful advice and feel better after talking to them. I remembered a senior sharing with me the importance of having my own money and not being too trusting. 🫢

✨Not desk-bound

I love how my job requires us to be on the ground pretty often. I can’t imagine having to sit at the desk for 9 hours straight, 5 days a week 🥹 I’m thankful that i’m able to go out for walks and move about esp after a heavy ass lunch (food coma 😴)

✨Making a difference to someone’s life

It’s amazing how one house visit can bring about a positive change to someone’s life. I love how i’m able to help people daily and make a difference to their lives. This may be in the form of emotional support, lending a listening ear or helping them to apply for government schemes. All these small actions add up and will definitely bring them some sort of comfort!

Now let’s talk about the not so nice things:

😖 Being exposed to the unglam side of work

I meet all kinds of seniors at work and have to face some challenging ones, ie: urinary incontinence, hoarding. The environment of the house may not be the best and I gotta learn to deal with it.

😖 Unappreciative seniors

While we’re just doing our job and trying our best to help every senior, there may be some who fall in the gap and not able to receive certain grants due to the criteria. They will then be upset and scold us as we are unable to help them. We also face seniors who slam their doors shut on us or just ask us to go away. (thinking we are some salesman)

😖 Repetitive and mundane

I’m not sure if it’s the same for all jobs, but after a while I do feel that the job can get repetitive. Though we meet seniors with different personalities, we are still repeating the same narrative and I feel it may become boring after a while. Maybe it’s just me 🤭

So there we go! A little insight into what I do daily and the good and bad of the social work sector 🤪
