What is homesteading?

Homesteading is the practice of living frugally or self-sufficiently, especially by growing and preserving food. Many people think that you need a lot of land to do this but that is not true. All you need is the drive to reduce waste, some time to grow some food, and the desire to learn how to preserve food for yourself and/or family.

When I lived in Chicago, I learned how to bake from scratch. I was able to not only reduce cost by baking basics, I was able to gift some baked goods to friends.

I grew herbs and tomatoes on my window sill and on my shared porch with neighbors. Helping us all eat fresh.

I learned how to can while living with my in laws. preparing food for long term storage.

Now that I have land I just expand that knowledge and get to put it into practice in bigger ways.

Don't let the size of where you live deter you from homesteading. You can live a homestead life!
