Guide to White Sands National Park

White Sands National Park is the largest gypsum sand dune in the world, with sparkling white dunes stretching over 275 square miles 🌎 It’s truly one of the most incredible places I’ve visited

THINGS TO DO AT WHITE SANDS

* Dune Drive- An 8 mile one way scenic drive through the park, starting and ending at the visitors center (the only road in the park)

* Sand sledding or sand boarding- sleds are sold at the visitors center!

* Interdune Boardwalk- 0.4 mile walk on an elevated boardwalk over the sand (wheelchair/stroller accessible)

* Playa Trail- 0.5 mile roundtrip hike (not through the dunes)

* Dune Life Nature Trail- 1 mile loop on the edge of the dunes

* Backcountry Camping Trail- 2 mile loop hike through the heart of the dunes

* Alkali Flat Trail- 5 mile round trip trail, takes you to the edge of Alkali Flat, the dry lakebed of Lake Otero

THINGS TO KNOW BEFORE YOU GO

* Check for closures! The White Sands Missile Range is adjacent to the park. The park is closed during missile testing. This is mainly an issue if you’re planning to camp in the park because missile testing is typically in the middle of the night or early morning but there’s no camping on testing days

* The entrance fee is $25 per vehicle. Or, you can use the America the Beautiful park pass, which is $80 for the annual pass
