Renting in NYC: Checklist

So you just got the keys to your new New York City apartment! Congrats, that’s a huge accomplishment! Here are 3 important things you need to do before you start to officially move in and get settled!

Take pics of everything!

By everything I really mean EVERYTHING. Before you move any furniture in, take pictures and videos of the entire apartment and be sure to include pictures of any scratches, scuffs, marks, and especially anything that appears to be broken. If you want any chance of getting your security deposit back at the end of your lease, you’ll want to have these pictures and videos to be able to reference and…prove… what damage was your doing and what was already there!

Fix it up please!

Now that you finally have the keys, it’s time to go check the apartment and all the appliances for any fixes that need to be done. Just because you have the keys, doesn’t mean you agree to rent the apartment completely as is. Check to make sure you water temperature and pressure is working and that your appliances and locks work!

Introduce yourself

It’s so important to introduce yourself to your super and any staff your apartment might have. These are the people that fix what needs fixing and will help get you in your apartment when you accidentally forget your keys. Show your face, say thank you, and be friendly because these are the people who will make the biggest impact in your experience as a first time renter!
