I recently went for my first ever overseas networking session at Busan International Film Festival! I was super new to everything and just wanted to go there for the experience, but boy did I learn that I was SEVERELY under prepared for it… SO here’s my tips for you so you don’t make the same mistake as me! Come 👏 Prepared 👏
1️⃣ Have your portfolio ready
- Great tool for quickly showing potential collaborators your body of work and your skills!
- Might not be something applicable for all jobs. But basically just have something to showcase ready!
- Portfolio can also be your IG or socials like LinkedIn! You could consider preparing a separate IG account specifically for work.
2️⃣ Come with an intention in mind
- e.g. for the film festival networking session, many directors, writers and producers were there to find potential partners to collaborate with, either for a short film, a feature film, or looking for potential overseas partners as well.
- I came with a much less serious intention. It was more to make friends and connections, perhaps in hopes of a future collaboration. But that would have been hard for me as I didn’t have point 1 ready!!
3️⃣ Have name cards ready!
- Easiest way to connect with people and have something for them to remember you by.
- With technology these days, you don’t need a physical name card either!! #savetheearth
- But depending on the kind of people you’re networking with, you could exchange instagrams too! That would bring me to point 1 to have your IG account prepped for networking too!
You just need these 3 things ready to come prepared in my opinion! I share more networking tips here but I believe these 3 things would be the baseline. Sounds easy but definitely a lot of preparation needed before the actual networking session… JIA YOU!
