Hello!! So are you deciding if art school is right for you? Here’s what i have to say as a current student of nafa , doing my diploma of fine arts!!

1. Time management ⏱️⏳

Having adequate time management is important, because it’ll determine if you are able to complete your work on time or not.Though sometimes even with time management, unforeseeable things happen and you end up not being able to churn out a work that you are satisfied with😔

example : My latest assessment was 5 weeks after the start of semester, so we didn’t really have time to think of what we wanted to do

2. Money Constraints 💸

In nafa , we have 2 assessments each semester, and for each semester, the project cost materials are not reimbursed to the students, meaning you’ll have to find a way to abide by the module guide while at the same time save money. And this can be really hard if you’re from a family who’s financial situation isn’t the greatest!!

* i’ve had classmates spending 2-3K for one single project 😬

3. Lack of Tools ⚒️ 🧰

Though the school provides basic materials, like paint, hammers & drills etc, there are students who misuse the materials & machines and that leads to loss or spoilt tools, thus theres always some sort of lack in tools ☹️

4. Physical and Mental Health / Class Environment

Art students sacrifice sleep before anything else , just to be able to complete their works in time for assessment, but more often than so, we end up making unsatisfactory works and this sometimes affects our mental health greatly 🥹 though it helps if you have supportive classmates!! I was from a previous cohort and am repeating a year in a new class, and i can tell you that the class environment really helps with your mental health. My previous cohort was gloomy to say the least, and practically everyone was against each other somehow or another 🥶 but this time round, the i had classmates were supportive and tried their best to give advice whenever i needed help - if you’re reading this, love yall <3

5. Extra Credits

Courses in nafa require you to take up electives ontop of your semester of modules , and the latest class ends at 8:30pm 💀 so like you got to adhere and adjust your schedules to your class timetable 😭

6. NO CAFETERIA !?🥲😭😭

I really would appreciate it if the school had a cafeteria or at least a school cafe because FOOD IS SO EXPENSIVE and not to mention, nafa is a campus located in the city area with alot of other school and cooperate offices . To make things worse, all of our lunch breaks clash with the office lunch hour ( 12-1pm ) and we all just end up buying maggi mee or instant microwave food frm 7/11 🥲

All in all, I love making art and I’ll most probably continue to do so in the future, but sometimes i do wish i never needed a physical certificate for a better job / pay so that i could just sign up to be an apprentice and live my life out somewhere 🥲🙂
