Don’t get me wrong—recreational drinking can definitely be enjoyable, and a fun way to unwind at the end of a long day. But I found that the stress of my previous full-time job really caused me to depend on having a drink after I got home to decompress. I would look forward to it so much that when I opened the fridge and realized I was out of drinks, I would feel my mood actually shift. Plus, even though I wasn’t getting drunk every night, it was definitely making a dent in my bank account. Alcohol’s expensive, y’all!
I really hope I’m not coming off as judging anyone who enjoys a nightcap, and I’ll still enjoy an alcoholic drink every once in a while. I just wanted to share my experience about relying on an unhealthy coping mechanism during a period of my life where I was overworked, stressed, and exhausted. Unhealthy coping mechanisms can come in many shapes and forms. This just happened to be mine.
I had to look at what was underneath it all—what was at the root of me depending on alcohol instead of getting real rest and processing the day. Once I did that, I could move forward and choose better ways to spend my time (and money) at night.
Now, I enjoy making fun drinks like mocktails, lemonades, ciders, and teas that make me feel warm and fuzzy at night and get me ready for bed ☺️
