I have had what I thought was “acne” since I was 16 years old. I’ve been on birth control, antibiotics, accutane, tried all the topicals method from tretinoin to clindamycin to salicylic acid. Nothing worked for 10 years and it was nothing but trial and error. It wasn’t until earlier this year I found about exactly what I was dealing with: malassezia folliculitis, AKA “fungal acne”. This is essentially a yeast infection/imbalance on your face (or other parts of your body) and has to be treated like a fungus.

Before I dive in, to be honest, there is now “how to” or “one size fits all,” in this category. What works for me, may not be what works for you. I would be lying to you if I said I did this through only one or two avenues alone… this was an entire lifestyle change and took TIME & PERSEVERANCE.

But I can tell you:

1. Finding out what type of acne I had was the pivotal moment. Fungal acne is VERY different from regular acne and cannot be treated with the same methods- it won’t help & will likely make it worse. (think: almost every current acne treatment on the market)

2. From here, I researched what products I could use not only on my skin, but on my body, and even my laundry. (Have to special order my laundry detergent: Molly Suds) I found out, people with fungal acne have VERY limited options and have to focus on the art of simplification 🤌

SkinSort.com has been a great resource for checking what is safe and what isn’t.

3. People who struggle with Malassezia need to focus on nutrition as well. Just like with any other fungus, sugar, refined grains/flours and starches will feed it. For me, this looked like cutting out refined sugar completely, swapping for natural sources and alternative options like monk fruit + coconut sugar. Additionally, for me this still wasn’t enough. I even had to eliminate most glutens and cut way back on starchy vegetables, and majority of dairy. 😫

4. Daily vitamins, minerals & detoxing!

I researched and found people who struggle with imbalances more than likely are seriously lacking certain vitamins and minerals, as well as have gut health issues. So, I buckled down on getting minerals and vitamins through supplements and refining my nutrition to ensure my main source was through my food.

I began to research foods that were detoxifying, fiber-rich and had high amounts that people with food allergies have common deficiency’s of like: zinc, magnesium, iron, calcium, vitamin A + D.

I did SO much more in addition to this and still am each and every day. From fasting, to using Celtic salt/Cayenne pepper as a natural remedy, and even parasite cleansing + daily detox baths. If you want more info— I’d be happy to share.

If your “acne” is similar to my before picture, is itchy and inflamed and doesn’t seem to go away with traditional acne solutions/dermatologist visits, you could be dealing with malassezia folliculitis. 🥲
