Sooo I’m from the Midwest and recently moved to Nashville. I met my amazing southern boyfriend here (he’s from Mississippi) and he’s having me make allllll the best of these southern dishes.
🍅 First thing get you some green tomatoes, I go to the farmers market to get mine and they are amazing !
I take them and slice them and 1/4 of an inch or so ….. honestly I just eyeball it so it’s not too thin lol
next I lay them on paper towels and sprinkle some salt on each side and take more paper towels and place them on top.
let them soak up as much of the juices as I can , they cook way better when then are dryer
Ok….. this next part get three bowls
First Bowl- will contain about 1 cup of buttermilk (regular milk is fine too) and 2 eggs
Second Bowl - 1 cup AP flour and your seasonings . I don’t measure just so you can see the seasoning is a good measure usually lol , you can use so many kinds , garlic, creole , Larry’s just make sure you season it
Third Bowl- I use a mix of panko crumbs and cornmeal …. You can use one or the other I just like the texture this way. About 1 cup each
Use a wet hand 🤚 and a dry hand 🖐️
1. Dip tomato into milk egg mixture
2. Dip into flour mixture
3. Dip back into milk egg mixture
4. Dip into panko cornmeal mixture
Next place into skillet of grease …. I do about 4-5 minutes per side or until golden and crispy
Next place on paper towels to let them drain
I use either a homemade ranch or dill dressing and they are delicious
