Spooky stories for Halloween 👻

The haunted house 🐦‍⬛

This is a true story from my childhood when I was six. It feels like a classic American horror movie plot: a young family moves into a new house they bought for a very low price. The house was well-built and spacious.

About the Family:

My parents were young teachers, and they had two daughters: me (6 y.o.) and my baby sister (1 month old). We were unfamiliar with the area, the village was tiny, where everyone knew each other. We moved in and nothing seemed out of the ordinary.

However, there was one room we avoided. Technically, we could enter, but my parents decided not to furnish it because it felt creepy. It housed two cabinets left by the previous owners: one glass-fronted and the other a large wardrobe. These cabinets occasionally made strange noises—the glass one would tremble as if someone was walking nearby, while the wardrobe creaked like it was being opened and closed. Ultimately, that room remained empty. Btw, my sister took her first steps in there. Another quirky detail: we always slept with the living room light on—a mystery I wouldn’t understand until years later.

👤 Story 1: Shadow

One late evening, after we had all gone to bed, my mom was putting my sister to sleep. Once she dozed off, my mom turned towards the wall where the living room light fell. As she turned, my sister began to cry. My mom thought, "Oh no, I’ll have to turn back to her." But she saw a shadow that looked like my dad leaning over my sister. Relieved, she thought, "Great, help has arrived." But when she turned around, there was no one there! My dad was sound asleep with me on the other side of the room. She said he was so close, and it had a man silhouette!

😫 Story 2: Who cried?

One night, my mom went to the bathroom. While sitting there, she clearly heard a woman sobbing just beyond the wall. The crying was so close it felt like it was right next to her. In the morning, she mentioned it to my dad and even asked our neighbor (the former owner) if they had heard any crying during the night. Everyone insisted it must have been a dream.

💡 Story 3: The light

One day, our grandmother decided to visit us. From a distance, she noticed the lights were on in our house like confirming we were home, so she headed toward us. As she got closer, the lights turned off, and she found out the door were actually locked. We weren’t home that day, cause we were visiting another town.

📺 Story 4: the TV

Back then, we had video players where we inserted cassettes. I only had one cartoon that I watched every day (I now realize even ghosts must have gotten tired of the endless repeat). After finishing the cartoon, I turned off the TV and went to bed. My bed was right behind the wall where the TV was. Just as I was drifting off, I suddenly heard static coming from the living room. The light was off, but there was a faint glow. My mom woke up and said, "Why didn’t you turn off the TV? Go turn it off and go to sleep!" I was so confused (thankfully, I didn’t know about ghosts at that age) and went to the living room and switched off the TV again.
