When I had my son in May 2023, it was lowkey a traumatic birth. I had an emergency c-section and it was a long recovery process. I was stressed out, overstimulated, lacked sleep, and lost my identity. I didn’t know how to be a mom, and I didn’t know how to get back to my “old self.” I stopped eating enough, and I was also breastfeeding (still am!!) which burns 200-500 calories/day. So naturally I lost alllll the cute pregnant weight I had gained within 2 months. I felt ugly 24/7 and hated my body. I’ve always been naturally slim, but my postpartum body was a new low. Finally, 6 months later in December, I had enough. I had enough of hating how I looked, felt, and comparing myself to other women. So I went to the gym.

I’m not gonna get into my routine since that’s not the point of this post. But I educated myself on the best technique for muscle growth and weight gain. Obviously, by eating more and lifting heavy. But I researched the right workout routine for my body type and goals. And I stayed consistent.

It’s now August 2024 and I have showed up for myself. Every. Single. Week. I have NEVER been consistent in the gym for more than maybe 1-2 months. But it’s now been 8 months.

It takes trial and error. You cannot get discouraged because something didn’t work. It’s part of the process. Make the necessary tweaks in your routine. But whatever you do, do not give up. Stay focused on the goal.

I also realized, once you become a mom, there is no going back to your “old self.” There is only finding yourself in a new form. Finding your identity as you take on the role of mom.
