hi everyoneee here is what I learned from all the jobs i’ve worked and my rating on them 😆 hope this helps you with finding a suitable job for yourself!!

I’ve been hustling since secondary 2 😮‍💨 and pretty much been working every school holiday, I think it’s safe to say i’ve had my fair share of MANY experiences regarding part time jobs!

Warehouse jobs:

Overall rating: 6/10

Warehouse jobs are pretty physically strenuous and can get VERY boring very quickly. I’ve worked 3 different packing jobs from packing cosmetic products, to mooncake and dietary products. The work is pretty much the same with little variations. Times past fast when you have lots to do but it also gets tiring super easily. Respect to all full time warehouse workers 🫡🫡

Pros: You are still earning money either way 🤷‍♀️, some warehouse has aircon, you learn the true value of hard earned money 💪, this may be a #financialliteracy learning point for you, as it was for me. I learnt to not anyhow spend money!!

Cons: Tiring, dusty environment compared to retail and F&B but it’s a warehouse so it’s quite expected, pay may not justify how tiring the job can get

F&B jobs:

Overall rating: 7/10

Personally not a fan of F&B jobs…everything about it I actually liked but It’s the washing that I didn’t like. I worked at a small ice cream shop and had to do A LOT of washing and it made my hands crack a little because of how coarse the soap was. Couldn’t use gloves as there was literally no time to put them on and take them off. I also worked at Yakun in the central area where it was literally packed EVERY DAY, EVERY HOUR. You have to be very adaptable and able to work fast in F&B. I did get free food every shift so that’s always a plus!

Pros: Aircon environment, pay can be good, easy to learn your routine especially if you’re a service crew, can get free food!!

Cons: A lot more cleaning than you expect, might have to deal with rude customers (but you get to learn how to deal with them!)

Retail jobs:

Overall rating: 9/10

My favourite job was working as a sales associate at pandora! I did have good and bad experiences so i’ll share them both. I worked in central area and really enjoyed interacting with customers and advising them on the jewellery! Quite a handful of our customers are also tourists so it can be fun to have small talk with them and I would say 9/10 of them are very friendly! Other parts of the job include keeping track of inventory and etc. which is also very doable and help to pass time. My manager and colleagues were also very nice and patient with me!! Despite this though…I did work at another retail job and god bless 🙏 because what actually was that experience.. This particular job had warning signs to me even before I joined but I wanted to give it a try either way. I won’t lie…they seemed quite underprepared with high expectations. Usually on your first day on the job you would have some sort of briefing or a short talk with whoever is in charge to know about all the main things of the jobs like where you can find the packaging, how to use the POS system and etc. but that was not the case for this job 😃 When I arrived the manager wasn’t even there and she only came in about an hour+ later and the full time staff didn’t even know I was supposed to come in on that day 😭😭 ya..even after all this..I texted about receiving my pay and the manager didn’t even open my message for 2+ weeks. Only when I called her did she bother to reply me and eventually paid me. There is also more things about this job that was just plain bad but its too long to talk about (lmk if you want to hear more I would be glad to share LOL) But lesson learnt: don’t let people walk over you😇

Pros: Good for those who like to interact with customers or passionate about what you are selling, nicer environment to work in, pay can be good some may even give you commission!

Cons: May experience what I experienced, can be quite tiring at the start if you have to stand a lot/ work full shifts, might also drain your social battery if you have to constantly interact with customers

Tuition:

Overall rating: 8/10

I have recently started working as a teacher at Kumon! still relatively new at the job so my sentiments might change after awhile! However, I enjoy working there so far, only downside is that the pay is low but I’m a new tutor as a whole so can’t really complain much and my branch head teacher is not the nicest... that doesn’t stop me though 💪💪 I’ll be looking into private tuition too

Pros: I find fulfilment in teaching youths!! Job is relatively easy if you can teach well and show results

Cons: May have to work with people you don’t enjoy working with 🥲 pressure to make sure your student improve

As a whole I don’t regret any of the jobs I’ve worked because I’ve learned something from every one of them! Especially from bad experiences. Definitely go out and explore different kinds of jobs so you can find your cup of tea! What I liked may not be what you like.
