[Reposting as this post was previously taken down 😭😭]
I ended up with 8 (+1) cards all because of the huge wedding expenses and upcoming honeymoon, and the urge to chase miles for atas flying experience (#milesgame)
All the cards here do not have minimum spending. Currently I am using these cards for:
📅📅 Daily spends 📅📅:
My daily spends are mostly food and shopping (both physical and online). I choose cards that have one of the widest range of qualifying spends:
✨HSBC Revolution ✨Citi Rewards (via Amaze)
✨UOB Preferred Platinum
- All cards give 4 mile-per-dollar (mpd) for the first 1K qualifying spend (UOB: 1.1K) per month
- 💳 HSBC Revo: Contactless payment
- 💳 UOB Pref Plat: Mobile contactless payment (Pay via mobile platforms i.e Apple Pay etc and leave your physical cards at home!)
- (+1) Linking amaze card with Citi rewards card qualifies for 4 mpd for offline transactions
♟️STRATEGY♟️: I max out these cards in this order: HSBC Revo > CITI rew > UOB platinum
- Having 3 similar cards gives you the flexibility to exceed the 1k cap per month and yet able to collect 4mpd per month
🚇🚇Daily public transport🚍🚍
✨Standard Charted Smart Card
- Staying far north of SG, a single trip will minimally costs $2 💸💸
- SC Smart card gives 6% cashback (or 5.6 mpd till 2023) for public transport expenses
- Similar rewards can be used in fast food places (i.e macs, subway etc) and breakfast places (Ya Kun, Toast Box etc)
♟️STRATEGY♟️: As I primarily use this card for MRT and bus rides, I decided to redeem these rewards as cashback, since it would take me ages to accumulate and redeem the min amount of miles
✈️✈️Travel✈️✈️
✨UOB Lady’s card
- 6 mpd for qualifying transaction
- Choice of one category for qualifying spend per quarter
♟️STRATEGY♟️: I have chosen travel as the category for this quarter because of various upcoming accommodation and flight for my honeymoon
- Under this same category, you may be able to pay for your hotel wedding banquet too
- Definitely will revisit if the Travel category is still applicable
💰💰The “capture-all-excess” card💰💰
♟️STRATEGY♟️: This is for cases where (1) my monthly spending has exceeded my 3 daily spending cards (>3K), or (2) big ticket items with a single transaction of >5K 🤡
These cards are:
✨Amex Krisflyer card ✨UOB Travel One card
- Both cards do not have reward limits (Thus can “capture-all” expenses)
- HSBC Travel One gives 1.2 mpd for local currency spend, and 2.4 mpd for foreign currency spend
- Amex Krisflyer gives 1.1 mpd for local spend, 2 mpd for foreign currency spend (Jun & Dec only) and 3.1 mpd for grab rides
😴😴 The long forgotten card 😴😴
✨ CITI cashback + card
- 1.6% cashback with no min spend
- Oldest credit card that I have
- ♟️STRATEGY♟️It was the card (and previously posh everyday card) that I charge small amounts and pay on time, to accumulate a good credit score, which lead me to have all these cards today
- I have already accumulated 12M of good credit history on this card, and probably won’t need it
I would be doing a credit card review at the end of the year to further optimise my #mileshack, considering that there are new cards and evolving spending patterns. (While writing, I already realised I can ditch some cards 😝)
Here’s the post on how I manage these cards which includes how I ensure payment on time, and how I chose these cards.
❗️Disclaimer: Credit cards are like drugs, when used properly it can help you, but it can destroy you if not used properly. I do not recommend getting (even just one) credit card before ensuring you are able to control your spendings
