This is one of my favorite recipes. I created it about six years ago when I only had a handful of ingredients and wanted a cozy breakfast. I just made it yesterday for on Easter Sunday! 🐣🐰I didn’t feel like doing anything fancy and we had about four or five pieces of bread leftover from a #murdermystery party last weekend. You can use any bread you’d like i. this recipe. We just used white bread because that’s what we had in the house.

The ingredient still need for this recipe are:

1 Tablespoon butter 🧈

Sprinkle of brown sugar

1 teaspoon of vanilla

2-3 dashes of nutmeg

2-3 eggs 🥚

1/4 cup milk, cream, or half and half 🥛

Sprinkle of cinnamon

2-3 slices of bread (cubes)🍞

Preheat the oven to 350°F. Melt the butter in a small casserole dish or a soufflé cup. Use a pastry brush and brush the butter up on the sides of the dish and sprinkle the dish with brown sugar.

Mix the wet ingredients and spices together in a medium bowl. Cube the bread and add to the bowl. Let the bowl sir for at least 15 minutes. You can also place it in the fridge for 30 minutes to an hour, depending on the time you have. This will allow the bread additional time to soak up the flavor. The main thing you want to do here is make sure the bread is immersed in the mixture so all of it soaks up the yummy goodness. 😋

Pour the bread into the baking dish and sprinkle the top with cinnamon and a little touch of brown sugar. Bake for approximately 23 minutes or until there is no runny liquid in the dish. I’ve tried this for 20 minutes and it never seems to be long enough. If you check in at 20 minutes, it may be OK, depending on your oven. Mine has a mind of its’ own. You also may need it to cook a few minutes longer than 23 minutes.

From there, I usually serve it with a drizzle of syrup. You don’t need much because it’s pretty moist already and there is a sweet taste to it because of the brown sugar or the cinnamon. My boyfriend likes his with whipped cream on top.

You can always substitute ingredients if you have dietary restrictions or are choosing to remove ingredients from your diet. I’ve used skim milk, I’ve used heavy cream, and I’ve used half-and-half for this recipe. Something I keep meaning to try with this recipe, but haven’t yet, is to swap out the brown sugar with coconut sugar.
