While my trip to visit my long distance girlfriend Grace was all driving on my part, we had to take a few *unique* turns to make the trip work for me and my accessibility needs. Here’s a few tips that will hopefully help you when traveling with a disability or chronic illness!

1. Call your hotel ahead of time! ☎️

If you are booking a wheelchair accessible room this is extra important to make sure they have your reservation correct.

2. Know that you can make requests at the hotel per your needs! 🛎️

We all know how absolutely tiny hotel fridges are, but did you know if you have a medical need (fluids, medication, special dietary needs) you can request a second one!

3. Always ask if there is a microwave in the room! 🍽️

Just do it; you’ll be surprised. Our recent room didn’t have one but I needed one due to my limited diet and allergic reactions.

4. Never be afraid to ask! 🗣️

That no microwave situation? We simply asked if we could bring our own… and we did! We literally brought ours from home. A wild experience, but it paid off big time. The worst someone can say is no.

5. Pack spare medication. And then pack a little more! 💊

You never know what bag may be left somewhere, what may get spilt or may spoil. Having backups allows you to worry less.

6. Know local hospitals! 🏥

Hope for the best, prepare for the worst. Know what’s in network (if possible) and what options are closest and have the best reviews (as well as the departments/specialities you make need!).

7. Little luxuries… 💆🏻‍♀️

Seat cushions and neck rests are your best friend regardless of your mode of transportation. Packing spare headphones, chapstick, masks, and disinfectant will never go out of style these days.
