hey zesties! #storytime #music #piano #violin
tldr: I'm 35yo learning piano as an adult beginner.
just finished 8 lessons. patience and determinination is key. having fun! :) to anyone who wanted to try piano but is not confident of playing with two hands. guess what, it's slow and steady practice that gets everyone there! go for a trial lesson and see how :)
what I learnt so far on beginner tips:
- music theory is impt. prob need to study on ur own, in supplement to the piano lessons
- consistent daily short blocks of practice is better than a chunk of practice once a week
- don't trust those 'beginner' progress videos. and also everyone learns at their own pace! don't give up.
- piano lessons are essential as the teacher will help u correct ur posture and teach proper techniques before u build bad habits
- get 88key weighted keyboard at the very least
- feeling of acoustic piano is definitely way better than even the higher end of digital piano
- if u feel u r stuck on a part, practise something else, then rest/sleep on it. u might feel it is slightly easier the next time u attempt it.
- it's really practise, time, patience and determination as we slowly pick up the techniques and practise them in short pieces. don't expect to be able to play perfectly sight-reading at the first day.
- play pieces at ur appropriate skill level.

so my music background is not that deep. my family isn't well to do so I didn't have music lessons. first brush with music was in jc when I joined my sch harmonica band and we were awarded the prestigious gold with honours award at the Singapore youth festival SYF! my bf then is a grade 8 piano player....
then when I started working, I splurge on a student violin and went to a music school near my place. but as a working adult, studying CFA and Japanese at the same time, commuting yo work everyday takes 3h+, I didn't have much time to practise. so the 3-4years of violin lessons sorta went down the drain...
now that I'm 35 and preggie, I wanted to expose my bb to music. so I started taking up piano lessons at Ossia music school near my place. sgd 40 per 30min lesson.
went for the trial. quite like the teacher. so I signed up for 4 month package and they gave me 3 free lessons. so far so good. never imagined that I would be able to play songs with both hands. the idea of playing songs w both hands just seemed so daunting.
my teacher used the Alfred method books. and I practised at least 2-3 times x 30min everyday.
to be continued....
