Now that it’s Memorial Day weekend and the official start of summer here in the US, we are right on the cusp of the hottest summer we’re expected to have. With the bright sunny skies and warmer weather comes many people looking to start running and here in Arkansas we are already having 90 degree days and have been for a minute. I figured what better time than now to go over my beginner tips for running in the summer.

HYDRATE: Obviously. You sweat more in the summer, so you need more water. End of story.

EAT MORE FOOD: Once again, another obvious one. In the summer your body doesn’t store food the same way it does in the winter, so because of that your body needs more food to stay energized.

CARRY FUEL ON YOUR RUN: Going off the last 2, when you’re on a run (or any physical activity) you are depleting your energy levels. Combine that with the hot weather and sweat you are producing you will find yourself needing to fuel your body more during the summer. Invest in a good water bottle you can run with. Also try out different running fuels. Everyone is a little different but you can get things from goos to little waffles.

INCREASE YOUR SALT INTAKE: Okay this one definitely do your research on before going crazy, but salt helps retain moisture, thus helps you stay hydrated longer. Don’t go crazy and use too much salt bc that can’t be good.

GET ANTI CHAFF STICK ASAP: Look, if you are blessed enough to not have this issue then good on you, but if your tights even remotely touch you will want one. Just like how it sounds, it helps you from chafing. It can be used year round and anywhere skin on skin contact happens, just trust me on this one.
